The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.
"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. With luck from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.
The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
