EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
