Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
