Resurgent Medvedev Wins Maiden Championship in Over Two Years

Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 victories have been won on hard surfaces

A revitalized Daniil Medvedev claimed his maiden title for over two years with success over Frenchman Moutet in the competition title decider.

The athlete, a former number one, has endured a torrid period, winning just one win at the major tournaments and suffering a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

The player's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and issues with his service game in particular - resulted in him dropping out of the world's top 10 and ultimately separating with long-term coach Gilles Cervara.

Now collaborating with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually progressed in the recent weeks - peaking in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over Frenchman Moutet.

It is his first championship following the 2023 Rome Masters and maiden on a hardcourt after that period of 2023.

The win also signifies the Russian has won twenty-one victories at twenty-one different events.

"For the first time I am participating in a tournament with my children simultaneously, so to secure a trophy is particularly special," said world number 14 the champion.

"This title is in honour of my younger daughter Victoria, because the first title I achieved when my older daughter her name was born was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had lost his last six title deciders, including in the German tournament in the past months.

His counter-punching strategy and recurring emotional displays on the playing surface had led some to wonder if his capacity to play at the elite level was finished.

Yet the athlete has altered his approach in the last few weeks, attempting to approach the net and compete aggressively, supported by an improved service.

The champion fought back from a disadvantage in the initial set against the challenging Frenchman, taking four of the final five points to take the lead.

The competitors traded breaks in the following set before the challenger, attempting for his initial professional title, gained dominance to push for a final set.

Moutet defended four initial opportunities in a close deciding set before Medvedev secured a break to that score to secure the win.

Fittingly, he clinched the win with a point at the front of the court, with his opponent unable to handle a volley after a lengthy match.
